AN OPEN UMBRELLA
by Joshua Haddad

...One can awaken
to discover that he is not alone

as he had been crying,
struggling in anticipation,
there was a wanderer who heard his cries

One can awaken
to discover that the world is not so forboding

as he has been lying,
cowering in dark seclusion,
there was a mother who had been standing by

One can awaken
to discover that he is not yet meant to die

as he had been trying
grappling in desperation
there was a searcher who was gathering him a potion

As one passes throughout the rain
he may discover he had not been moistened
by the violent droplets of the glistening abyss

He may awaken to find a shield
A marvelous canvas hovering above his form
to find that a stranger has been holding an umbrella all along ...

Joshua Haddad started with The Umbrella Project in May, 1990 when he was 13 years old. He was attending Farnsworth Middle School near Albany, New York State where we did a project. He was the first member of our Youth Art Advisors.
